The intersection of US 53 and CSAH 332 in Koochiching County, MN, serves as a vital connection to International Falls and the international border crossing into Canada. With heavy commercial traffic, including extra-long logging trucks, safety and efficiency were key concerns. A new roundabout was designed and constructed to reduce crash risks, improve traffic flow, and accommodate vehicles more than 200 feet in length.
PROJECT
US 53 serves as the primary route into International Falls and the international border crossing into Canada, while CSAH 332 is a key connection for logging operations. With these competing traffic demands, the potential for severe crashes was a growing concern for local drivers, logging truck operators, and the Minnesota Timber Producers Association.
Koochiching County identified the intersection of US Highway 53 and CSAH 332 as a location in need of significant safety improvements. While there was no history of fatal or serious injury crashes, the intersection posed multiple risk factors due to high volumes of commercial and freight traffic, limited sight distance, and the frequent presence of extra-long logging trucks accessing nearby facilities.
Following an Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) study, Koochiching County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) identified a roundabout as the most effective solution to improve safety and maintain efficient traffic flow. The design needed to accommodate vehicles larger than 200 feet in length, ensuring safe movement for even the longest logging trucks.
SOLUTION
KLJ partnered with the County to lead the project from concept development through final design and bidding, providing a full range of services including:
-
Environmental Documentation
-
Right-of-Way Coordination
-
Signing, Lighting, and Striping Design
KLJ guided the project through MnDOT’s Level 1 Layout approval process, which required specialized coordination due to the non-standard, large-radius roundabout design. Public meetings were held throughout the process to share findings and gather community feedback.
RESULTS
The new roundabout has transformed this critical intersection into a safer and more efficient transportation route by reduces crash risks and improving freight operations while keeping traffic moving smoothly along this vital corridor. With its unique design and collaboration among KLJ, Koochiching County, MnDOT, and the Minnesota Timber Producers Association, this project stands as a model for balancing freight needs with roadway safety.
