2018 National Excellence in Concrete Pavement Award

KLJ, Sioux Falls Regional Airport Authority, and T&R Contracting, Inc. received the 2018 National Excellence in Concrete Pavement “Gold” Award in the Reliever & General Aviation Airports Category in November for recent work at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. The award is granted by the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) to recognize high-quality concrete workmanship performed by contractors, engineers, and project owners.

Between April and November 2017, the team completed construction of phase one of a three-phase project to reconstruct Runway 3-21 at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. The project consisted of removal and replacement of 48,000 square yards of 17-inch thick concrete pavement and 42,000 cubic yards of base and subbase material for runway and taxiway reconstruction, installing new lights, and constructing an aircraft arresting system as an emergency braking system for the South Dakota Air National Guard’s F-16 jets. Phase two of the project was constructed in 2018 and phase three is scheduled for the near future.

According to the ACPA, “award-winning projects were paved by 22 contractors and were located in 13 states or regions represented by ACPA-affiliated chapters and state paving associations.” This project was also awarded the 2017 Concrete Paving Award of Excellence from the South Dakota Chapter of the ACPA.
