Bittner to Present at Minnesota Transportation Conference
Mike Bittner, a traffic engineer with KLJ, will provide unique insight this week at the annual Minnesota Transportation Conference held at the Saint Paul RiverCentre. The focus for this year’s conference, which is the largest transportation event in Minnesota, is “Working Together – Connecting Minnesota.” On Wednesday, March 4, Bittner will give a presentation on breaking old habits with new traffic models.
Traffic modeling has advanced exponentially over the past decade. More robust modeling tools are leading to better data and, subsequently, better decision making. This presentation is designed to showcase four case studies where simulation traffic modeling was used to buck traditional traffic engineering methodologies, ultimately provoking more-informed decision making and better public engagement.
Case studies highlighted include the following KLJ projects:
- Highway 371 North of Baxter, MN – Conflict safety modeling in a densely-accessed corridor.
- Downtown Grade Separation Study in Downtown Moorhead, MN – Dynamic traffic assignment to assess the future potential of two new railroad grade separations.
- Highway 22 Corridor Study in Mankato, MN – Daily calibrated traffic models to assess a roundabout corridor.
- University Avenue in Grand Forks, ND – Multimodal level of a service on a corridor through a busy college campus.
The 2-day conference, which kicks off Tuesday, March 3, features more than 40 sessions that explore the latest transportation issues and innovations.
