Project

KLJ transformed the two-lane county road to an urban roadway, which included widening the road to four lanes, adding turn lanes, curb and gutter and medians. New features were designed, such as frontage roads and a shared-use path to enhance safety. Additionally, underground utilities were upgraded within the adjacent project area.

Solution

KLJ engaged Bismarck’s city officials from the initial design phase through construction and completion. The work included addressing roadway deficiencies, reducing traffic congestion, and developing a long-term traffic solution for the intersection. KLJ completed all project phases including planning, environmental impact analysis, design, traffic engineering and construction. Organized, consistent, and open communication with the city and community resulted in limited change orders, allowing the project to be completed on time and under budget.

Results

The design was economical and cost effective. The major roadway improvements were completed within a week of the original planned completion date. Congestion along East Century Avenue/Centennial Road has decreased significantly and the project has increased access to the area, decreased travel times, and increased pedestrian safety. This project was awarded an Engineering Excellence Award by The American Council of Engineering Companies of North Dakota (ND/ACEC) for excellence in transportation work.
