Project
Chateau Road is the only roadway connecting Medora, ND, with the Medora Musical and Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. With more than 100,000 people visiting the Musical each season and additional year-round travel associated with the Library, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) needed to improve the corridor’s safety, reliability, winter usability and emergency access.
Solution
Reconstructing the road required the project team to address a complex combination of geological, transportation, and environmental constraints. The roadway passes through the rugged North Dakota Badlands, where steep slopes, landslides, cultural resources, and poor soils complicated the development of a stable, constructable design.
KLJ supported the project through preliminary and final design, bringing together roadway, traffic, environmental, hydraulic, right-of-way, survey, utility coordination, constructability, and public engagement specialists. The multidisciplinary team developed a construction strategy responsive to the corridor’s terrain, seasonal traffic, and environmental setting.
The team also developed strategies to maintain access during Medora’s peak tourism season for the musical and construction access to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library which was being constructed concurrently, while preserving the surrounding Badlands scenery.
Results
The reconstructed corridor provides a safer, more reliable year-round connection to two of western North Dakota’s leading cultural destinations. The changes strengthen emergency access, enhance winter travel, and prepare the roadway to accommodate increased visitor demand. By addressing challenging terrain while respecting the natural landscape, the project supports Medora’s tourism economy, improves the visitor experience, and creates lasting transportation benefits for the community.
