Project
The project presented several challenges including removal of outdoor ice rink, volleyball courts and public restroom, and proper site location working around several existing infrastructure and easements on-site. The resulting project was an amazing addition to the park that flows seamlessly with existing park components and amenities.
Solution
The new playground consists of a poured in place rubber surface and also has an all-season community building with restrooms. Special attention was made to the grading for site drainage and accessible walkways between park elements.
Results
The Universal Playground would not have been a reality without the community stakeholders and companies who donated funds for this incredible asset. As a universally accessible park that is centrally located in the city of Mandan, it has been a great benefit to the community and surrounding area.
In 2016, the North Dakota Recreation and Parks Association awarded the Universal Playground a Golden Egg Award for outstanding and innovative park projects.
