BUILD Transportation Discretionary Grant

Department of Transportation has announced the availability of funds for the FY2019 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Transportation Grants. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis for surface transportation projects that will have significant local or regional impacts. Special consideration will be given to projects which emphasize improved access to reliable, safe, and affordable transportation for communities in rural areas, such as projects that improve infrastructure condition, address public health and safety, promote regional connectivity, and facilitate economic growth or competitiveness.

Eligible Applicants: States, local and Tribal governments, including US territories, transit agencies, port authorities, metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), and other political subdivisions of state or local governments. Multiple states or jurisdictions may submit a joint application and must identify a lead applicant as the primary point of contact. Each project party in a joint application must be an eligible applicant.

Minimum/Maximum Grant Request: Grants may not be less than $5 million or more than $25 million, except for projects in rural areas where the minimum grant award is $1 million. No more than $90 million can be awarded to a single state. $15 million (of the total $900 million available) may be awarded for planning.

Match: Federal share of project costs may not exceed 80 percent in an urban area. Federal share may be increased to above 80 percent in rural areas.
