KLJ Receives Three North Dakota Engineering Excellence Awards
KLJ Engineering LLC (KLJ), a comprehensive engineering and consulting services firm, is pleased to announce that the firm has been awarded three Engineering Excellence Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Dakota (ACEC/ND). The recognition is for the firm’s work on Ash Coulee Drive Reconstruction in Bismarck, Mandan Tennis Center in Mandan, and Hay Creek Park in Bismarck.
Each project was rated on uniqueness and/or innovative application of new or existing techniques; future value to the engineering profession and perception by the public; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner’s needs, including schedule and budget.
The Ash Coulee Reconstruction project transformed a rural two-lane roadway into an urban multi-lane corridor through three phases. The reconstructed area now offers a visually pleasing, well-lit environment with improved connectivity and aesthetic appeal with enhanced traffic flow and safety. KLJ provided a range of services including project development, environmental permitting, engineering, design, public involvement, right-of-way, surveying, and construction oversight. The successful project, led by project manager Adam McGill, resolved critical safety and traffic flow issues, also earning the 2024 Project of the Year Award from the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers (NDSPE) Chapter 3.
The Mandan Tennis Center, a 40,000 square foot domed facility, opened in December 2022. KLJ, under the leadership of project manager Brad Krogstad, provided engineering services for Mandan's first indoor tennis facility, situated conveniently off the interstate. The center features 6 tennis courts, 10 pickleball courts, and a 3,000 square-foot welcome center with retail space and a meeting room. Outdoor amenities include four additional pickleball courts and shared parking with the adjacent Starion Sports Complex. KLJ provided site survey, land entitlements, development and site design, storm water analysis and design, as well as various infrastructure components such as parking lots, drainage systems, and lighting. The facility allows for year-round tennis in the Bismarck-Mandan area.
Hay Creek Park spans approximately 26.6 acres and features amenities such as a picnic shelter with tables, restroom building, paved parking lot, playground, landscaping, paved sidewalks, trail connections to the Capitol Outfall shared use path, and around 6,000 feet of hiking/mountain biking trails. KLJ led the project, with project manager, Brad Krogstad aiming to create a safe and visually appealing recreational space for the neighborhood and broader community. The team’s involvement included site concept design, budget planning, coordination with consultants, surveying, plan development, bid administration, construction oversight, and stakeholder coordination. The goal was to make Hay Creek Park a premier destination for various outdoor activities, attracting hikers, bikers, runners, nature enthusiasts, and families from Bismarck-Mandan and surrounding areas.
The awards, which were presented during the ACEC/ND annual awards banquet in Bismarck, recognize projects that exhibit excellence and ingenuity.
