PROJECT

Hay Creek Park is a key access point to Hay Creek Trail system which is a paved shared use path that follows the scenic Hay Creek valley and crosses below Interstate 94 connecting north and south Bismarck. The extension of North 26th Street and several, reconstruction, resurfacing and neighborhood construction projects in the area improved access to Hay Creek Park attracting more shared use path trail users, mountain bikers, and community members to the area. The increase in foot traffic created an increased demand for additional park amenities and features.

SOLUTION

Recognizing this need, Bismarck Parks and Recreation District (BPRD) secured funding for Hay Creek Park improvements through a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant administered by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department. KLJ was hired by BPRD to play a pivotal role by providing comprehensive engineering and architectural services. These services included site concept design, budget planning, topographic surveys, construction planning, administrative construction management services and more. Due to the location KLJ’s engineers faced several design challenges including a reduced footprint, elevation challenges, building limitations and ADA strict compliance guidelines which KLJ engineers and consultants had to carefully consider and overcome.

RESULTS

The goal of the Hay Creek Park Project was to provide a safe, inclusive and aesthetically pleasing recreational area for the existing neighborhood and greater community. As a result, the new Hay Creek Park facilities' construction includes a restroom building, picnic shelter, playground, paved parking lot and access to miles of hiking and biking trails.

Today, the park's new and improved amenities promote an active lifestyle for the residents of the community while providing a natural retreat within the urban environment for current residents and future generations to enjoy!

In 2024, Hay Creek Park received the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of North Dakota’s award in Category J – Small Projects.
