Project

One of Bismarck’s oldest parks, Lions Park, is a large community park on the east side of the city. The park, surrounded by residential neighborhoods, has always served as a recreational area for swimming, walking, biking, skateboarding, disc golf, and ice skating. KLJ determined the park’s existing roadway system was inconsistent with current user operation and recommended it be converted to a better functioning and safer one-way system through the park. Vehicular routes were converted to pedestrian routes and historic elm tree canopies were preserved during construction.

Solution

KLJ developed a Master Plan for Lions Park which resulted in the renovation of new trails, roadways, lighting, irrigation, a new disc golf course, renovated tennis courts, new aquatics center, landscape architecture, new playgrounds, and new skate park. The project involved the redesign of the park to provide a more pedestrian-friendly layout. The vehicular circulation was removed from the middle of the park and relocated to a central location. Approximately ¾ mile of trail was added to the park; new shelters and playgrounds were added as well.

Results

Bismarck residents are now able to enjoy the many amenities of the Lions Hillside Park including new trails, roadways, lighting, irrigation, a new disc golf course, renovated tennis courts, new aquatics center, tree plantings, new playgrounds, and new skate park which have all safely transformed this centrally located park for future generations to come.
