PROJECT
South Camp Road is located within Mesa County between the City of Grand Junction and Colorado National Monument. It is part of the “Tour of the Moon” cycling route which has seen an increase in cycling traffic due to a rise of popularity of the route. Mesa County contracted with KLJ on South Camp Shoulder Improvement Project to develop and improve a long-term traffic solution to enhance safety along the Tour of the Moon cycling route between Rimrock Road and Monument Road.
SOLUTION
KLJ’s design included the addition of five-foot paved shoulders on both sides of South Camp Road for approximately 3,400 feet to facilitate the high volume of cycling traffic along the Tour of the Moon cycling route. The team improved intersections by refining the turning radii and existing approaches associated with a detached concrete recreational path parallel to South Camp Road. Two existing corrugated metal pipe (CMP) culverts were extended and an apron-entrance to an existing unimproved dirt parking lot on City of Grand Junction land was provided.
RESULT
The intersections of South Camp and East Fallen Rock as well as South Camp and Rimrock Drive now have increased visibility and safety for vehicles and pedestrians. Five-foot shoulders were provided for cyclists and the slope stability along the north side of South Camp was improved to bring it into compliance with current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) design guidance.
