PROJECT
In 2021, the White Shield East Segment of the MHA Nation located in White Shield, ND solicited a Sports Complex in the community. White Shield, named for Chief White Shield and located in McLean County, sought to provide the MHA Nation community with a Sports Complex that would house multiple sports and recreation facilities. The proposed project required specifics that encompassed their heritage and an extensive program that would become an important resource to the community.
SOLUTION
The MHA Nation worked with Brunton Architects & Engineers to develop a master plan for an 80-acre development just north of White Shield. KLJ was selected to complete public infrastructure improvements for the first 60 acres, which included site grading, water main, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and roadway pavement. The storm sewer system also incorporated a large retention pond that serves as the development’s stormwater management system. The pond was sized to accommodate current and future development based on the previous master plan. KLJ was also involved in wetland delineation, site survey, roadway and utility design, bidding, and construction administration.
RESULTS
The project site, covering nearly 11-acres, embodies the MHA’s tribal heritage and incorporates a comprehensive master plan that makes the sports complex an intricate part of the community. The Complex is located adjacent to the campus of the newly constructed Ralph Wells Jr. Community Center. Together, the facilities bring state-of-the-art sports amenities, wellness accommodations, meeting spaces, and eye-catching tribal attributes.
The facilities consist of a synthetic turf football field surrounded by a rubberized running track, natural grass baseball field, sand volleyball courts, acrylic surfaced basketball courts, concrete skatepark, multi-sport court, splash pad, a concession building, and a concrete parking lot. Additional components included sanitary and storm sewer systems and wastewater service necessary for the site as well as field and pedestrian lighting.
KLJ completed design work in early 2021 with construction starting in the spring. The facility was completed in 2022 just in time for the White Shield Warriors, the high school team, to open their football season on the newly completed field and enjoy the stadium with the public.
