Project Overview

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the city pool in Laurel, Montana was closed and never reopened. In response to the community’s desire for more interactive and family-friendly recreational spaces, the City of Laurel hired KLJ to transform this site into a splash park. Located in a central urban area, this project leverages the existing infrastructure to create a vibrant and engaging space. The development of the splash park was made possible through the generous support of the community, receiving numerous donations from local businesses and residents.

Solution

The solution for the splash park was a blend of planning and community collaboration. It included selectively tearing down outdated structures to make room for new facilities, while recycling usable materials to reduce waste. KLJ partnered with PlaySpace Designs, to create a splash park full of diverse and fun water features for people of all ages. The project also included crucial infrastructure upgrades, specifically enhancing the water supply and wastewater systems to ensure the park operates sustainably and efficiently. Moreover, there was a strong focus on community engagement, with active involvement from residents and stakeholders in the planning and design process, guaranteeing that the new park would meet and exceed local needs and expectations.

Results

The new splash park provides a recreational area that fosters community interaction and outdoor activities. This facility is expected to significantly improve the quality of life in Laurel, offering a safe and fun environment that families can enjoy throughout the summer months. The contributions from local donors not only underscore the community's commitment to enhancing its recreational facilities but also help ensure the project's success and sustainability.
